Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Breaks Ground on Highly Anticipated Steinmetz Hall and T

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 6, 2017) – The Central Florida community gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of Steinmetz Hall and The Green Room, completing the original three-theater vision for the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.   

Steinmetz Hall is a 1,700-seat, three-tier acoustical hall that will host “unplugged” local, national and international performances from rock to symphony that rely on the fidelity of sound. The acoustical hall will showcase performances by local arts groups and attract the best in musical talent from around the world. Using a moving shell and towers, the stage can be hydraulically lengthened, shortened or even lowered to create a flat floor.

The Green Room, which will have its own entrance from South Street, has been designed as a gathering place for performers and guests for musical exploration, creative programming, recording, intimate performances and events.

Steinmetz Hall and The Green Room are scheduled to open in 2020.

“There is no doubt that Orlando has become one of the nation’s premier destinations on multiple levels, showcasing theme parks, sports and our very own, world-class arts center. The addition of Steinmetz Hall and The Green Room adds to our city’s vibrant offerings for residents and visitors to enjoy for many years to come,” said City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

“Today marks another milestone in our history, as our community unites to support and celebrate the importance of arts as an integral part of our treasured quality of life,” said Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs. “What we’re embarking on this morning, with the construction of this amazing new performance space, will be enjoyed forever by our local artists and community, as well as generations of families, students, artists and visitors to come.”

The total cost of the project is $237.5 million. Through public partnerships and private philanthropy, Dr. Phillips Center has generated $222.8 million and will continue to fundraise for the capital project.

“There is great excitement surrounding Steinmetz Hall and The Green Room, and Dr. Phillips Center has committed to raising the remaining $14.7 million through private contributions. We know that once a project breaks ground, it generates additional investment interest,” said Jim Pugh, chairman, board of directors, Dr. Phillips Center.

Funding sources include public partnerships with Orange County (Tourist Development Tax), City of Orlando, State of Florida, City of Winter Park, as well as private gifts led by philanthropists Margery Pabst Steinmetz and Chuck Steinmetz, Joyce and Judson Green, and additional benefactors and supporters.
